It looks like adding the star power of Keanu Reeves to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was a good call as the movie has become the second-highest grossing video game film of all time.
That’s according to Box Office Mojo which lists the film as having a worldwide gross of $462,581,646. That beats out the previous 2nd place holder Detective Pikachu which grossed $450 million at the cinema.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had a production budget of $122 million, so it took in 3.8 times that in the cinema.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s success also means it beat both of the previous movies. The original took in $319,715,683 at the box office, while the sequel managed $405,421,518. While certainly not unheard of, it’s unusual for each film in a series to bring in even more than the last. With that said, both of those movies had a $90 million production budget each, thus Sonic 2 grossed 4.5 times its budget at the box office.
It’s no surprise, then, that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has already been announced for March, 2027.
But as wildly successful as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was, it didn’t even come close to toppling the most successful video game movie of all time. That record is still held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie which took in a worldwide gross of $1,360,847,665.
