SEATTLE — Washington sewers and crafters may want to start stocking up: JOANN, the longstanding fabrics and crafting supply chain, will be closing 21 stores in the state.
The company has filed a motion seeking court approval to close approximately 500 stores nationwide as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.
“JOANN is the place to go and it just makes me sick and sad that it’s leaving us,” said Lisa Bias, a longtime customer of JOANN.

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” JOANN said in a statement.
Company leaders made the decision following a “careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company.”
JOANN emphasized that right-sizing its store footprint is crucial to ensuring the best path forward for the business.
“Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN,” a spokesperson said.
Residents in Washington said they are upset to see their go-to location for crafts close.
“People do crafts because it’s like therapy, it’s a way of calming yourself, it’s a way to be productive, the way we contribute to people, so that’s just going to be hindered now,” said Marie Witherell.
Here in the state, customers now worry about having to make a far drive just to be able to get the supplies they need.
“You will have to drive farther away and have to find different stores. It just won’t be the same if you can’t browse the bulks of fabric,” said Lena Askari.
JOANN originally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the first in March 2024 but was able to become a private company and keep all of its stores open.
In its second time filing for bankruptcy on January 15, 2025, JOANN said inventory issues were a leading cause of the filing.
JOANN Fabrics and Crafts has been in business since 1943.
